9 - Converting the Attic into a Bedroom
from:Most older homes where built with unfinished attics that weren't good for much other than storage. Sometimes, these old attics can be converted into a livable space such as an extra bedroom. However, when you are considering converting your attic into a spare room, there are several things you must consider. The following paragraphs will discuss some of the considerations you should make before starting your attic renovation project.
Before you begin to convert your old attic into a new bedroom, you should evaluate the shape of the room. Most often attics have angled walls. Will a bed fit comfortably against the wall? Do you see a feasible place to put a dresser or night stand? Is there ample space to build a closet? Will a desk and computer fit comfortably in the room? It is very important to determine whether the walls of your attic will allow the room to function as a bedroom before you begin the renovation project.
Another thing you should do before you start your attic renovation project is consider the future. You may currently want to convert your attic into a bedroom, but will you always want it to be a bedroom? Be sure you can answer questions like this before you begin the conversion process.
When you are thinking about converting your attic into a bedroom, you should check the existing insulation in your attic. If your attic is not insulated, now would be a perfect time to do it.. Proper insulation in your attic can help decrease your heating and cooling bills while making your home more comfortable. In addition, insulating the attic floors will help decrease the noise level for those dwelling in the area below your new attic bedroom.
Finally, it is very important to consult with a licensed contractor to help answer all of your construction questions. Converting your attic into a bedroom could require some major work such as:
adding new flooring
adding new windows
adding new drywall
In addition, your heating and cooling system may need to be readjusted to include your renovated attic. Most often, your contractor will recommend a separate heating and cooling system for your new attic bedroom. The recommended systems are much like the heating and cooling units used to control the air temperature in hotel rooms and suites.
Once all of these important considerations have been made, the insulation has been checked, a contractor has been consulted, and you are ready to proceed with your project, you can search for renovation ideas a few different ways. Firstly, you can make a trip to your local library and search through the recommended home improvement books. Librarians are always willing to help out in any way they can, and some great ideas can be found in these books. Also, you can search the internet for ideas on how to convert your attic into a bedroom. Just utilize your favorite search engine to generate a list of links, and you are well on your way.
