Countertop Materials to Consider
from:Kitchen countertops are one of the first things people see when they walk into your kitchen. Many people opt to replace their old countertops when they renovate their home, either because they are putting their home on the market or just because they want to improve the look and functionality of their kitchen. When it comes to countertops, there are two basic types: solid and laminate. While most do-it-yourselfers can install laminate countertops themselves, if you are installing solid countertops, you’ll need to hire a professional. Even though the solid countertops are quite a bit more expensive than the laminate ones, they are much more durable and lend an air of luxury to your home.
Solid Surface Countertops
Solid surface countertops are far more durable than laminate countertops, although they are also more expensive. Still, they offer several benefits to homeowners. For one thing, they are non porous, which means they are more sanitary and they’re not going to warp or bow. They are also available in a variety of colors and although solid surface countertops are prone to scratches, in most cases, the scratches can be sanded out. For the most part though, solid surface countertops need little to no maintenance and are easy to clean.
Laminate Countertops
Laminate countertops are cost effective and can be installed by a professional or mot do-it-yourselfers. While laminate countertops don’t offer luxury, they are durable and rather easy to install so even if you pay a professional to do the job, it won’t cost an arm and a leg. What’s more, laminate countertops come in a variety of decorative colors and finishes so you can easily match your décor. They are easy to clean with a damp cloth and detergent. Although the more expensive countertops can withstand more heat than laminate can, placing a hot pan on a laminate countertop can result in a burn so it is wise to always use a hot pad.
Ceramic Tile Countertops
Ceramic tile countertops are another choice when renovating your kitchen and they can be quite inexpensive and very attractive, though there are some disadvantages. For one thing, the grout between the tiles can be difficult to clean and it may stain. In addition, if you ever need a large smooth surface area, you won’t find it on a ceramic tiled countertop. Still, there are those who would have no other kind of countertop so it just depends on what your needs are. Before you decide on the countertop that is right for your home, visit your local home improvement store so that you can actually touch the textures of the different countertops. While you can read about the features online, nothing beats being able to run your hand over the fixtures you are thinking of putting in your home.
